The logarithm is the degree to which the base must be raised in order to get an argument, i.e. function of two variables. The base-a logarithm of argument x is the degree to which the number a must be raised to obtain the number x.

Designation: log_{a}x = b, where a is the base, x is the argument, b is, in fact, what the logarithm is. For example, 2^{3} = 8 ⇒ log_{2}8 = 3 (the logarithm of base 2 of 8 is three, because 2^{3} = 8) . With the same success, log_{2}64 = 6, since 2^{6} = 64.
